The first edition of this book was titled Networking Awesomely, in part because I thought networking was awesome, in part because I was very excited to be publishing a book. Truth be told, it was all I could do to keep myself from adding an exclamation point to an already enthusiastic moniker.
Now, a little older, a little wiser, and with far more books under my belt, I’ve returned to rewrite this title. The aim was to share essentially the same ideas, but present them in a less repetitive, more concise and digestible fashion. I also wanted to publish something with superior editing and formatting, and a reduction in verbiage.
Despite the change in name, presentation, and words I use to describe the concepts, I still believe the ideas presented in the following pages are awesome and worth sharing. They were revelatory to me as I picked them up over the years, and I still receive a large number of emails and in-person thanks when on tour from readers who gleaned helpful tidbits, and sometimes grand umbrella-concepts, that helped them grok what it is to build healthy, helpful, and long-lasting relationships with other people.
I hope you find some value in these ideas, too.
Networking Fundamentals eBook Colin Wright
The book's strong points lie in its ability to encourage and motivate a reader to become more active in their networking as well as its ability to clearly define a plan of action. The author's cadence and word choice really make the reader feel as if these themes are acheivable. This point is also boosted by the short inserts that contain real life examples from the author's friends and associates. The book falls short in the way of giving you sample talking points or effective opening remarks. The absence of such suggestions give the feeling that the author doesn't understand that not everyone innately knows how to W-O-O. In that regard Dale Carnegie's books, though old, would present a nice complement to this reading.

Networking Fundamentals eBook Colin Wright Reviews
Fresh! Great out of the box and real advice on how to network right. Honest. Recommended for people who need to get their butts into gear like me, got me moving fast and in the right direction (I quit my job yesterday morning and I already know now where I am going, who I am meeting and how greatly because of this short and fun book). This book will get you asking yourself some cool questions about who you really are in this world and what you came to offer to others and how. The author is a young brilliant and generous mind, I emailed him and he responded within hours, cool dude. Get it and don't look back!
I downloaded Networking Fundamentals because I enjoy Colin's work and wanted to read his thoughts and advice on networking. For the price of $0.99 you'll receive a lot of helpful advice from someone who has a lot of networking experience. It isn't "Never Eat Alone" by Keith Ferrazzi in regards to depth but Colin still gives the reader great fundimentals for those starting out and good reminders for those who have a bit more networking experience. Some of the advice can be a bit obvious but not so much to others.
This book is for those wanting to support and inspirational entrepreneur. If you need a refresher on priorities and a good point of view on social circles & networking this is for you. Common it's only 99 cents!
This book is not for those with "know it all" attitudes or those not willing to give his advice a try. Those who take "I'm a very shy introvert and don't ever want to change that" to heart will be wasting their time.
Colin has an ability to recognize the truth about some of life's more challenging situations, aka meeting people when you feel awkward about it; and as a result he is able to write with conviction. His authoritative assesments of all the querky scenarios involved with networking in our ever growing social and global community provide valuable tools for anyone who's trying to navigate the new road rules of doing business with friends as well as just plain making meaningful relationships out of what could have been just a handshake. The fact that he's also included some great stories from like-minded entreprenuers make this a very interesting [and quick] great read.
I first bought this networking guide in its PDF form. Since I liked it soo much, I had to buy it for my as well.
And I still luv every minute of it - Colin's a tight connector with a huge network, and his guide is a VAULT full of
genuine tips and tricks.
It's well-designed, super-practical and entertaining like hell.
Learning about creating your network has never been so much fun !
The idea to feature dozens of networking-savvy people is a smart move as well - the featured peeps range
from over-the-top extroverts to shy introverts - so any personality type is covered here.
Highly recommend this to anyone wanting to build a powerful network the genuine way !
Everything I've ever previously read about networking was all about getting around a room throwing out as many of your business cards as possible. As someone who is shy, no wonder I hated the thought of networking, and was only willing to buy this book because of the reduced price. In retrospect I'd have been willing to pay the previous full price or close to it. I was quite surprised to find myself enjoying reading a book about networking - I had given up on any material about networking being of any use to me.
The approach of this book feels very different to my previous reading about networking.
The author focuses a great deal on building genuine relationships and avoids a friendship-pushing approach. There is also quite a bit of material on building your "personal brand" that somehow manages to not sound fake and image-obsessed but more like being mindful about how others see you. He devotes a lot of space to communication and self-presentation that feels like an analytical breakdown of how networking situations operate and what "output" to expect given certain "input".
I appreciated the specifics about social interactions, even if some of it did irritate me. For example, the author discusses how being a picky eater can make a bad impression. I like eating most things, but I have allergies to common restaurant ingredients. The author didn't discuss allergies, but for me the thought followed anyway, and I didn't like the thought that avoiding things that make me unwell can make a bad impression. Except that it can - quite few people don't take allergies seriously and classify the person as a picky eater, which in turn looks bad. So maybe I shouldn't fault the author for basically saying it like it is.
I really appreciated that the author went into details of how to manage networking interactions - even small notes on eye contact in a large space, having a drink in your hand to so as to look more part of things, what your business card should look like, presenting yourself and your work in a way people will remember, doing research on people you want to contact and material you want to talk about, and following up with people in a manageable fashion. And despite the fact that the author clearly has gone on heavy drinking sprees, he also includes some advice on how to manage social situations tactfully if you want to avoid drinking too much. I appreciated he didn't leave out people like me who don't have a high capacity for alcohol and want to maintain a good impression.
Each chapter is paired with material from another author. I'm sure it was meant to add to the content, but to me it was a distraction and didn't add much new.
This book got me thinking a lot more clearly about how networking "works" and generated a good dozen project-level action items for me to improve my networking. I consider the book particularly good considering the author's age (under 30). It would be interesting to have him address the topic of networking again in 10 or 20 years and see what more he has to say.
