The second in the Niccolo series and just as compelling as the Lymond series in it's own right. I love the way the author allows the reader to become so invested in the characters. All of the characters from the central ones right down to the peripheral characters, all make their presence felt.There is far more to the young Claes, dye apprentice turned world worldy adventurer then was first apparent and I'm enjoying seeing more and more of the machinations of Claes being revealed.
A word of warning though, whilst the series appears to be a rollicking good yarn there are some very dark and uncomfortable undertones present in this series. The stories themselves are quite addictive reading.
I'm giving this 5 stars as well, I'm enjoying this as much as the Lymond series and I can tell you that Ihad my doubts about that.

I have read this series before, admittedly, many years ago. I totally enjoyed it last time, and I am thoroughly enjoying it again. This is the perfect type of book for me; it's historical, it stays true to the language and styles of the period, great characters and it will keep you intrigued to the end.
The author intertwines her intriguing characters with actual history making the Niccolo series very authentic. I read the first book of this series and was halfway through the second book when I had to return it to the local library. These books are so good that I bought the series so I wouldn't have to stop reading again until I wanted to eg finish the series!

If you want exhaustively researched historical fiction and writing of the highest quality, then read Dorothy Dunnett. Another masterly novel.
