Jeff McElroy has done it again, thrilling the reader with an epic ride of storytelling. Indeed, “Californios 2” is as entertaining as was its debut predecessor, “Californios,” which won an IPPY Gold Medal award, no less, among other honors.This collection of 13 short stories brings to mind a series of wave sets, with a few brief “flash-fiction” pieces being followed by longer stories which are in turn followed by still longer word swells just as small waves yield to bigger and then bigger ones.
The result is varied storytelling at its best. To be sure, the flash pieces are special in their own way; the middle-length rides have their own unique character; and the long-form tales offer a different thrill altogether – just as small waves and overhead curls each offer their own challenges and rewards, neither necessarily “better” than the other, just different.
Moreover, one need not be a surfing enthusiast to revel in McElroy’s storytelling just as one needn’t be from Central California to savor Steinbeck’s tales.
One sampling from “Californios 2,” from its story titled “The Odd Sea,” from a scene about an hours-long epic arm-wrestling match: “… He cared not about the cheers and jeers of the spectators. He cared not even about that night. What he cared about was a night many years from this moment, a night when, as an old man alone on some dilapidated pier with a bottle of whiskey and a good cigar, he could smile with satisfaction about the time he beat the strongman in the foul bowels of a South African harbor saloon.”
You will care, and right now, about the characters within these well-told stories, some of which will make you smile; some make you flinch; some make you ponder love and nature and the universe; all will bring you satisfaction.
